Considering the entire system life cycle upfront is a key perspective critical for success as a systems engineer. Systems engineers need to consider the impacts of the Production, Utilization, Support, and Retirement stages in both Concept and Development stages. Systems engineers use many different engineering specialties (also know as the “ilities”) to account for life cycle considerations throughout the systems engineering process. Both technical and business reasons will be provided to show why thinking about the end before the beginning is critical for system success.
There is a saying in the Netherlands: βIt is not enough to be right, people have to accept that you are right.β It is through effective communication that we help others accept that we are right. As Systems Engineers embrace Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), we have the opportunity and responsibility to effectively communicate our MBSE efforts to a wide variety of people: from fellow MBSE practitioners, to software and hardware design engineers, to Project Managers, to customers, to executives, etc. You may be the best MBSE modeler in your organization, but if you cannot get others to accept your efforts and results you risk irrelevance. This presentation focuses on tailoring your MBSE communications based upon your target audience and objectives. Advice will be given to help you move from simply being right, to being accepted as right.
